The sound of brass scales and drum rhythms could be heard from dawn to dusk on the IUPUI campus and in downtown Indianapolis last weekend. The Drum Corp International World Championships took place at Lucas Oil Stadium on Aug. 10-12.
The 32 teams that took part in the annual event practiced in Military Park, which is across the street from the IU McKinney School of Law, before their performances.
The preliminary competition began on Thursday around 11 am. Only 22 teams made it to the semi-finals, which took place on Friday. Out of that 22, the 12 top scoring teams made it to the final competition on Saturday.
The annual event started up again for the first time since the COVID-19 outbreak last summer and continued again with another consecutive win for the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps, directed by Patrick Seidling, and based in Concord, California. They have been in the top two every year since 2007, and the top five every year since 1975. This year their program was entitled “the cut-outs.”
It was Dan Acheson’s last year as CEO of Drum Corps international, and overall a great year for many competitors.
